WPH #465: How To Play MARGINAL Poker Hands [WSOP Main Event]

In this video Jonathan sat down with James Romero to analyze a hand that James played during the $10,000 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event.

The hand starts with James opening under the gun with KJo 40bb effective. He finds two callers in the LJ (40bb) and BB (40bb). The flop is J98xdd and they both discuss how this flop can be dangerous as the LJ has a strong range on this board. James plays for a check call and after the big blind folds they take it heads up to the turn which is 4h. James checks again and the LJ sizes up and decides to bet 66% pot which would set up for about a 1 stack-to-pot (SPR) on the river if James were to make the call. Instead he decides to shove for 1.5x pot to deny equity to his opponent’s hands that are a pair/straight draw or hands that would have a tough time calling off their tournament life in the main event.

On this Poker Coaching channel we cover a weekly poker topic to help improve your poker strategy!

WPH #464: Brad Owen SCHOOLS This Amateur Poker Player!

Popular poker vlogger Brad Owen finds himself firing a 3 barrel bluff in this exciting poker hand from the Lodge Card Club. Will he get it through?

Jonathan discusses the merit of using certain poker hands to use as bluffs. Generally these are hands that have the opportunity to improve on future streets. He also talks about how you should be more cautious to raise with low valued draws when playing in extremely deep stacked cash games. If you end up getting a lot of action you are often going to be up against better draws that have you crushed. Jonathan would have preferred a slightly smaller turn bet size from Brad to set up for a larger river shove.

Brad Owen is a WPT ambassador and co-owner of The Lodge Card Club in Texas, he is a very successful YouTube poker vlogger for a few years having over 665,000 subscribers. Primarily a cash game player Brad has started playing more tournaments since the start of 2022, earning around $250,000 in cashes whilst his lifetime total live tournament winnings is only $298,000. His biggest cash of $99,000 came in December 2022 at the Wynn, Las Vegas in the $10,400 WPT Championship.

Ez is an American amateur poker player who plays at The Lodge occasionally but is willing to play all stakes from $2/$5 up to $200/$400 on the live poker stream.

They are playing the ‘nit game’ here (shown by the red buttons in front of the players still remaining in the game). It has the same rules as the well-known stand-up game where the last player to lose their nit button has to pay a fee to each player at the table. Brad, Big Tony and Ez still have their nit buttons in front of them in this poker hand.

This poker hand took place during a Lodge Live stream in Austin, Texas. Big Tony in under-the-gun +1 kicks off the action with a raise to $600 holding Q9cc. Brad Owen with AQo decides to 3bet to $3,000. EZ decides to cold call from the cutoff with 86dd and Big Tony decides to defend his initial raise. With $6,450 in the pot the flop brings Jd 6h 2d and Big Tony checks. Brad continues his aggression with a bet of $2,500 and Ez calls with his pair and flush draw. With the pot at $11,450 the turn reveals the Kc. Brad continues bluffing on a card that is great for his range by firing $8,000. EZ makes the easy call. The river bricks out for Ez’s flush draw as it comes the 7s. Brad fires the third barrel and moves all-in for $18,075. Ez ultimately decides to fold what is now only 3rd pair and Brad picks up the $27,450 with just ace high!

WPH #463: $1,100,000 Pot & DWAN Rivers a BOAT!

The Hustler Casino Live Million Dollar Cash Game had it all. Incredible bluffs, huge pots & a whole lot of entertainment! This poker hand between two legends of the game is one that will go down in history. It was inevitable that Tom Dwan and Doug Polk would clash at the felt and they gave everything the poker fans were calling for!

Jonathan talks about how larger bet sizes are used in general when you are playing extremely deep stacked cash games which is one of the reasons why this pot was so large by the river!

He also talks about which types of poker hands make the best candidates to use as a semi-bluff raise. Generally they are hands that have no showdown equity but still have good equity if your opponent decides to call.

This epic showdown happened during The Million Dollar Game on The Hustler Casino Live Stream! The minimum buy-in for this high stakes poker game stood at an incredible $1,000,000!

The hand started with Doug Polk raising from the cutoff with 54ss to $3,000. Dwan responded with a 3bet to $14,000 with pocket sevens and Doug makes the easy call as the effective stack is so deep.

With $31,000 in the middle the two players take it heads up to a flop of K72dds. With middle set and the aggression lead, Dwan continues for $15,000 and Doug decides to float with a backdoor flush and straight draw.

The 6h falls on the turn and Dwan continues for $30,000 into a $61,000 pot. With an open ended straight draw but no showdown equity, Doug decides to turn his hand into a semi-bluff and raises to $115,000. Dwan goes deep into the tank and ultimately decides to just call rather than raise. The pot is a massive $291,000 as a 6 lands on the river which now gives Dwan a full house!

Dwan does decide to check on the river before facing a $420,000 bet from Polk. Again Dwan goes deep into the tank trying to figure out if he can raise and still get called by worse hands. He doesn’t think so and ultimately opts for just a call instead to the shock of many of the poker players at the table!

Doug Polk is the owner of The Lodge Card Room along with Brad Owen and Andrew Neeme. Doug has $9,500,000 in live tournament earnings and 3 World Series of Poker bracelets, along with a win in the $100k Super High Roller for $1,600,000.

Tom Dwan also known as durrrr is a 36 year old American professional poker player. He is a favorite poker player for many around the world as he grew up playing in the highest stakes cash games online before Black Friday. He was a regular on Poker After Dark and High Stakes Poker. He is known for his fearless style and big bluffs. Now, Dwan is generally playing in private high stakes cash games in Asia. He is also often seen on the Triton poker tour & has over $6,450,000 in live tournament earnings.

WPH #462: $1,100,000 PUNT By RAMPAGE POKER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rampage Poker played in the biggest game of his life so it was inevitable he was going to play the biggest pot of his life! Watch this crazy poker hand from the Million Dollar Cash game on The Hustler Casino Live Stream!

Jonathan talks a lot about how Rampage has a very strong nut advantage on a board of QJT as he has all of the AK and sets where his opponents should not have them as they would often 3-bet. Rampage uses his nut advantage to run a huge bluff against an opponent who is under repped the strength of his hand, but Handz find the call?

This poker hand took place during the Million Dollar Cash Game on The Hustler Casino Live Stream! Players were sat with a minimum of $1,000,000 and the blinds were at $500/$1000 often with a $2000 and $4000 straddle!

The action folds to Ethan ‘Rampage Poker’ Yau in the small blind who opts to raise with A7cc to $8,000 due to the $2000 straddle. Handz goes for a non standard flat call from the big blind with his pocket queens which invites Pav along from the straddle with Kh8d.

With the pot at an already huge $29,000 the three players head to the flop which comes Qd Jd Tc, delivering an action-packed board. Rampage decides to slow down and checks, Handz checks with his top set, and Pav takes the initiative in what he believes to be two weak hands. He bets $15,000. Rampage with the nut advantage decides to seize the opportunity and raise to $50,000. Handz now has a tricky decision but does decide to just call and Pav quickly realizes his mistake and gets out of the way.

There is $144,000 in the middle as Rampage and Handz head to the turn which is the 2c. Rampage Poker has now peaked up the nut flush draw and decides to maintain the pressure by overbetting the pot for a massive $175,000. Handz, who still has clean outs to a nutted hand, remains composed and calls.

With almost half a million dollars in the middle the two poker players see the 5s on the river. Rampage who has bricked on his gutshot straight and nut flush draw decides to continue with his story and fires another overbet in, this time for the tune of $618,000. Can Handz make the correct call and win a $1,800,000 pot?

WPH #461: QUADS & $270,000 In The Middle! [BRUTAL Poker Hand]

Fireworks were bound to happen when Sam Trickett rivers a full house against Dan Colman’s quads in this high stakes cash game. But can Trickett find a way to not go broke?

Jonathan discusses the merit on using specific hands to lead with multiway, particularly on flops that you think will get checked around at a high frequency. He also discusses how you should look to raise more when you are playing deep stacked with hands that are strong but have an easy opportunity to be outdrawn.

Jonathan talks about what he believes the optimal river raise size should have been for Dan Colman considering Trickett’s range to bet into multiple people, bet big on the turn and continue for half pot on the river. It will be strong full houses/straights or bluffs that would fold to any raise size. This is why Jonathan believes Colman could have used a larger raise size and still been paid by all of Trickett’s value hands on the river.

Sam Trickett is a professional poker player from the UK, he is 33rd on the all time money list with almost $28,000,000 in total live earnings. He is a regular in high stakes cash games and tournaments. He came 2nd in the ‘Big One For One Drop’ which was the first $1,000,000 buy-in back in 2012. He won over $10,000,000 after losing to Antonio Esfandiari heads-up.

Dan Colman is a professional poker player from America, he is 20th on the all time money list with almost $29,000,000 in total live earnings. He has 1 WSOP bracelet which came in 2014 from the $1,000,000 buy-in ‘Big One For One Drop’ where he won $15,306,000 beating Daniel Negreanu heads-up.

The Super High Roller Cash Game was in 2015 and involved some of the biggest professionals and businessmen in the game such as Patrik Antonius, Andrew Robl, Doug Polk, Dan Colman, Scott Seiver, Paul Newey and Matt Kirk.

This poker hand place during a special Super High Roller Cash Game hosted at the prestigious PokerGO Studio in Las Vegas! This high stakes cash game poker hand history from 2015 features some of the biggest names in poker, including Paul Newey, Matt Kirk, Dan Colman, Scott Seiver, and Sam Trickett. With a minimum buy-in of $250,000 the blinds were set at $400/$800 with a $200 ante for every player per hand.

In this particular poker hand, Newey kicks off the action with a raise to $2,500 with AsJd from under the gun, and he is called by Kirk, Colman, Seiver, and Trickett. The flop comes 8d 7d 4c, and Trickett decides to lead for $6,000 as he has flopped bottom set. Unfortunately for him, Colman has also hit middle set and he decides to call. They both are now heads up into the turn which is the Ah. Trickett continues his aggression with a bet of $22,000 and Colman decides to call once again. The river is the 7c which now gives Trickett a full house but Colman has rivered quads. Trickett decides to bet $35,000 and is faced with a raise to $100,000 by Colman. This sends Trickett deep into the tank before he eventually decides to call only to be shown the bad news and lose an enormous pot of $270,000! which is called by Colman after Seiver folds. The turn is the Ah, and Trickett decides to lead for $22,000 as he has hit bottom set. , which is again called by Colman. As we head to the river, which reveals the 7c, Trickett bets $35,000, but Colman makes a bold move with a raise to $100,000. Trickett decides to call, resulting in an enormous pot of $270,100!

WPH #460: INSANE READ From Daniel NEGREANU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Daniel ‘KidPoker’ Negreanu is known for his incredible reads at the poker table. His range analysis is generally spot on and he always has a great feel for where his opponents are at in a hand. Watch the poker legend at work in this $300,000 poker tournament against another incredible poker player; Mikit ‘fish2013’ Badziakouski.

Negreanu is on top form in this hand as he is all loosey and goosey but not eating a sandwich. He uses this strategy to try and loosen up his opponents so that they become more talkative and relaxed which allows him to make better reads and understand where he is at in any given poker hand.

Jonathan discusses implied odds and the fact that Negreanu has many backdoor draws on the flop. Badziakouski is deep enough that Negreanu can comfortably float on the flop to try and hit either a heart on the turn, which means he would pick up a flush draw, or a nine. This is assuming that Badziakouski has a stronger hand than just a pair. In this particular instance he can actually also hit one of his overcards.

Daniel Negreanu is 3rd on the all time money list with over $50,000,000 in total live earnings, putting him 3rd on the all time money list. He has 6 World Series of Poker bracelets.

Mikita Badziakouski who is known as fish2013 online (one of the best online cash game players) is a 31 year old professional poker player from Belarus, he has over $38,000,000 in live tournament winnings putting him 9th on the all-time money list and 1 WSOP bracelet.

The Super High Roller Bowl V was held in December 2018 from inside the PokerGO Studio at ARIA Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. The $300,000 buy-in attracted a field of 36 players and created a prize pool of $10,800,000 million. Issac Haxton won the event for $3,672,000. Neither Daniel nor Mikita cashed in this particular high stakes poker tournament.

This poker hand took place during the Super High Roller Bowl V at the prestigious PokerGO Studio in Las Vegas! Poker legend Daniel ‘KidPoker’ Negreanu takes on the online beast that is Mikita ‘fish2013’ Badziakouski. The Super High Roller bowl is the largest annual poker tournament with a staggering $300,000 buy-in. The blinds in this poker hand are at 1,000/2,000 with a 2,000 BB ante. Negreanu opens the action from under the gun 7 with JThh and raises to 5,000. Badziakouski makes a very standard call from the lojack with pocket nines and they move to the flop heads up. The flop comes 8d 7h 6s and Negreanu continues his aggression with a bet of 5,000. Badziakouski with an overpair and open ended straight draw decides to raise to 16,000. With a gutshot, two overcards and a backdoor flush draw, Negreanu decides he is not going anyway and decides to call. The turn is an action card as it is the 9s. Negreanu checks to the aggressor but Badzikouski now realizes that although he has a set, his hand prefers to check behind. The river comes the 8h which now gives Badziakouski the lead again as he has rivered a full house against Negreanu’s straight. Negreanu checks again, and now Badziakouski decides to open the clip and fires for 60,000. Ultimately, after lots of talking and analyzing Negreanu makes the correct read and decides to fold.

WPH #459: NEGREANU Can’t BELIEVE It! [High Stakes Duel]

Daniel Negreanu took on the challenger Eric Persson in the 4th edition of the High Stakes Duel hosted by PokerGO in the studio in Las Vegas. Both players put up $50,000 with the winner earning themselves an impressive $100,000!

Jonathan agrees with Persson’s large bet size on the turn when he turns the flush draw after Negreanu has now checked twice after his aggression preflop. Jonathan talks about how you should consider your bet size depending on what hands you are trying to make fold and what you think is the size that your opponent will fold those hands. Persson correctly reads that Negrean has a jack in this hand so he needs to bet big enough that is too much for Negreanu to call.

Persson does a fantastic job at confusing Negreanu on the river by calling out his exact hand and telling him that he has to call. This ultimately makes Negreanu fold the winning hand!

This poker hand took place during a high stakes poker showdown in the PokerGO studio as part of their High Stakes Duel Series. This was their 4th edition and saw Daniel Negreanu face off against the new high stakes figure and multiple business owner Eric Persson. The hand starts with Persson limping from the button with 43dd and Negreanu opting to raise to 3.3x to which Persson calls. Both players started this hand over 150bb effective. The flop brings the Ah Jd 7c which gives Negreanu middle pair and a back door straight draw. Persson has a very weak backdoor flush and straight draw. Both players opt to check. The turn is the 7d and Persson decides to use a pot sized bet of 2,000 after Negreanu checks once more. Negreanu calls. The river is another 7 as it lands the 7s. Negreanu checks his full house and Persson attempts to bluff with an almost pot sized bet. Persson does some excellent speech play and confuses Negreanu so much that he folds the winning poker hand!

In this poker hand history, the hand starts with under the gun straddling. It folds to Villain 1 who calls from the small blind, Jaman completes his option, and Villain 2 checks from the UTG. Heading to the flop, the community cards reveal Ad 6h 2c. Villain 1 checks, and Jaman decides to bet $20, which prompts under the gun to call and the small blind gets out of the way. The turn card is Kc, and Jaman decides to slow down and check behind after the small blind checks. On the river, an 8d appears, and Jaman bets around half pot with just 5 high which forces a fold from the small blind and Jaman drags in the $100 pot.
