***For those interested, here is how the PokerStars point structure works:

The exact formula for how Home Game statistics are calculated is based upon these factors:

n = number of players in tournament
k = place of finish (k = 1 for 1st place, k = 2 for 2nd place, etc.)
p = integer (n * 0.34)

‘p’ determines who receives points. ‘p’ is the number of places that finish in the top third of the tournament. If there are 6 entrants, then n=6, therefore p=n*0.34, making p=2 (integer of 2.04).

If n = 4, 2 points are awarded for 1st
If n = 5, 3 points are awarded for 1st

For n > 5, points awarded are:

n * (sqrt(n)/sqrt(k)) / [sum (sqrt(n)/sqrt(k)) for k = 1 to k = p]

Each tournament with 6 or more players pays out the total number of points equal to the number of entrants (n). The numbers generated by the above equation tend not to equal ‘n’, in these cases the points are normalised accordingly, by keeping the same ratio but applying it to n, rather than >n.

So if there are 6 entrants n=6, p=2. As p=2.04, only the top 2 finishers will receive points, meaning the equation will work like this:

For 1st, n=6, k=1, p=2.04:

6 * (sqrt(6)/sqrt(1)) / [(sqrt(6)/sqrt(1)) + (sqrt(6)/sqrt(2)) + (sqrt(6)/sqrt(6*0.34))]
6 * (2.449/1) / [(2.449/1) + (2.449/1.414) + (2.449/2.04)]
6 * 2.449 / (2.449 + 1.732 + 1.71)
= 2.49

For 2nd, n=6, k=2, p=2.04:

6 * (sqrt(6)/sqrt(2)) / [(sqrt(6)/sqrt(1)) + (sqrt(6)/sqrt(2))]
6 * (2.449/1.414) / [(2.449/1) + (2.449/1.414)]
6 * 1.732 / (2.449 + 1.732 + 1.71)
= 1.76

These results are then normalised so that 6 points are awarded in total (as each tournament awards ‘n’ points):

For 1st place:

6* (2.49 / (2.49 + 1.76)) = 3.51points

For 2nd place:

6* (1.76 / (2.49 + 1.76)) = 2.49 points

  1. Jonathan,

This sounds like a lot of fun. I would like to participate but sadly I don’t get home from work until, 7pm EST. Will any future tournaments run later or on the weekends.

    1. Where can we find the schedule for these tournaments? Where can we find the leaderboard for the league?

    2. All of the information is online on PokerStars in the home game lobby. Just sign up, get in the lobby, and then click on “Schedule” or “Standings” then “Play Money”.

  2. I downloaded client from USA , since this is not a cash game but a home game, do I have access? I cannot find how to enter

    1. Yes, Americans can play. I give detailed instructions in the blog post. Please follow them. If they are not clear enough, please contact PokerStars support. I hope to see you in the game.

  7. This is great. I’m excited to be a part of it. I can certainly play tomorrow, because of the holiday. Mondays in the future might be harder, because of work.

I’ll also be curious to see if I can play from my iPad or iPhone. I can’t see the home game tab on it, but maybe, once I am registered for a tourney from the computer I’ll still be able to play from the mobile device.

    We’ll see. Good luck everyone.

  8. Just found out about your homegame. I signed up, but haven’t been accepted yet. Maybe won’t get the acceptance in time for this one? Thanks, looking forward to it.

Hope you’ll have the time to accept all the applications before the game begins. Looking forward to playing in these tournaments. Looks like the club is growing to a decent size and these tournaments are going to have a nice big field.

I know this may be off topic but i know that you are sponsor by blue shark optics and I am thinking about purchasing the new Lava Shark. However I was wondering does all of the models include Crystalion-3 lenses or only the ones that state it in the description?

  16. Hey Jonathan,

Are u planing to make 2nd season of the league ? Unfortunately I did not know about it until now and I am eager to join 🙂

    Good luck

    1. I am not sure. I will be too busy playing the WSOP to host the stream each week but I will let the game keep running. I will still give out the regular weekly prizes. I will likely start the full league back up sometime in August.

  17. Hi Jonathan,

Just came across your blog, and really like the content. Can’t wait to study your books. Are you still running the home games? If not, will you do this again in the future?

  19. Jonathan for 1st place you say it is $1,000.00 at the 2015 WSOP or EPT event that you attend. What if I don’t attend those events will U send a check to me?

    1. The purpose of giving the money to the winners is so they can play in a WSOP or EPT event. If you can’t attend one of those for whatever reason, I am sure we can work something out.

  20. This seems like a lot of fun. I applies an have sent a link to friends to try to join as well. I hope I am allowed to play!!! The podcast is top notched !!

  21. Loren Finkelstein

    Hi Jonathan,
I just tried to get into the game for the first time since I installed Pokerstars NJ on my computer. I blew it. When I signed up for Pokerstars NJ, they converted my account, but I seem to have lost my club membership. When I went to request it again, the club couldn’t be found. Maybe because it’s the last day, or maybe because it’s not on the same server? I’ll have to try again with the next one.
