Should you go pro?

poker-ships-jonathan-littleEvery time I do a webinar where members of my training site, FloatTheTurn.com, can log in and ask me questions, I find myself answering one specific question: “When should I become a professional poker player?” To hopefully avoid re-answering the same question again in the future, here are my thoughts on the subject.

Let’s assume you play $2-$5 no-limit hold’em at a local card room, which is about the stakes most people play who ask the question. …

Tough hand from EPT Malta

ept-malta-pokerIn one word, my trip to the 2015 European Poker Tour series in Malta was “brutal”. In almost every event, I doubled up in the first two hours only to either get unlucky in a huge pot or go super card dead, eventually busting near the end of the first day. This lead to me having zero cashes in the eight events I entered. Despite the abysmal results, I am very happy with how I played and focused throughout the trip. …

Combating a Maniac

3534The following hand is from one of my newest books, Jonathan Little on Live No-Limit Cash Games, Volume 2, The Practice. This book is a collection of 105 in-depth hand quizzes that I played at $10/$20 and $20/$40 No-Limit at the Commerce Casino. My students have told me this is one of  my best work to date. If you haven’t check it out already, I suggest you do so. Would you have played this hand the same way I did? What do you think about this quiz format? Let me know!

When to skip hands at the poker table

33333I recently traveled to Atlantic City, New Jersey for a World Poker Tour event at Borgata and I was shocked at how many players were willing to voluntarily miss numerous hands at the table, presumably to go on a smoke break, go to the bathroom, or try to get off tilt after a tough loss. Most of these players would simply get up and stroll away from the table with no concern for the hands they were missing. In reality, these players mucked a significant amount of equity. …

Psychological Fortitude

musclememoryHappy New Year! Strive to ensure this year is the best yet!

I recently played a World Poker Tour event at Borgata in Atlantic City. Around halfway through day two, a kid who seemed to play reasonably well lost with 2-2 versus A-9 on A-9-2 for a significant pot. He was left with a 20 big blind stack. He continued to play a solid strategy and eventually got all-in with K-K versus A-Q to bust around an hour later. A little while later near the end of day two, I watched another player who seemed to play well lose a huge pot with 10-10 versus Ad-Jd on 10d-7c-4s-2d. He was also left with 20 big blinds and proceeded to go all-in with roughly 50% of hands until he eventually got lucky to double up when he was dominated. …

EPT Barcelona 2015 Video Blog

I recently had the pleasure of traveling to Barcelona to play the European Poker Tour events. This trip was tough because I ran quite poorly at poker, at least initially. I also never got on the right sleep schedule, likely because I went directly to Spain from Hawaii, which is on the exact other side of the world. It was tough! Below the video are links about my wedding and also links to a few fun hands I played in Barcelona.
