Brad Owen takes a seat away from the stream tables at The Lodge Card Club in this hand, but he has his trusty camera there to vlog all the action. After he gets check-raised all-in on the river while holding a straight, Brad attempts to completely soul read his opponent!
When deciding to take a line that involves floating the flop and bluffing the turn, you should be willing to fire another barrel on specific rivers especially if the river is unfavorable for your opponent’s turn calling range. Even if your opponent is likely to have overpairs, it is important to recognize which cards are good for your range and bad for theirs.

🔍 Preflop:
The player under-the-gun+1 limps in, followed by a limp from the hijack. Brad Owen raises to $100 from the cutoff with QJ of clubs and is met with a cold 3-bet to $305 from the big blind. The two original limpers fold, but Brad calls in position with his suited broadway cards which are also 20% of a royal flush.
💸 Flop – Td 6s 6c:
The big blind fires a continuation bet of $160 on the flop. Brad calls with two overcards, a backdoor flush draw and a backdoor straight draw.
💣 Turn – 8s:
The 8 of spades on the turn introduces a possible spade backdoor flush draw. The big blind slows down and checks. Brad picks up a gutshot straight draw and bets $425, having gained some additional equity. His opponent calls and they head to the river.
🌊 River – 9s:
The 9 of spades hits the river, completing the backdoor flush but also improving Brad to a queen-high straight. The big blind checks for the last time and Brad fires a near pot-sized bet of $1,500. To Brad’s complete surprise, the big blind decides to check-raise all-in for $3,720. What Brad says next reveals just how good of a poker player he truly is.
