WPH #498: Could YOU Make This Fold???? [Game of Gold]

Have you ever wondered how chess superstar Alexandra Botez would fare in a poker tournament? Well, here’s your chance as ice hockey legend Deryk Engelland puts her in a tough spot on the river!

When you are playing in a large pot and you have a short stack you should be aware that it is usually the best play to shove all-in with a poker hand that is likely good but very vulnerable to being outdrawn.

Alexandra Botez is a 28 year old American-Canadian chess player, she became a five-time Canadian National Girls Champion and won the U.S. Girls Nationals at age 15. Recently, she has appeared on both poker cash games and tournament poker streams, one of her first appearances was on the Hustler Casino Live stream with MrBeast, Ninja, Phil Hellmuth ‘The Poker Brat’, Tom Dwan ‘durrrr’ and Alan Keating where she won over $500,000. She has over 1,430,000 YouTube subscribers and over 1,200,000 Twitch followers.

Deryk Engelland is a 41 year old Canadian former professional ice hockey defenseman. Engelland played for the Pittsburgh Penguins, Calgary Flames and Vegas Golden Knights over his eleven-season career in the National Hockey League (NHL). Throughout his career, Engelland was best known for his physical play and fighting abilities.

The 2023 Enclave Celebrity Invitational was a $50,000 freeroll hosted in the PokerGO Studio in Las Vegas, Nevada. The 72-entrant field included celebrities, content creators, professional athletes, business leaders and professional poker players. With the likes of Alexandra Botez, Josh Richards, Bryce Hall, Nik Airball, Pierson Wodzynski, Nick Austin, Andre Drummond, Princess Love, and many more battling it out for the $50,000 prize pool.

Neither player cashed in this event.

Freeroll – 2023 Enclave Celebrity Invitational – Results

1st: Qiyu Zhou ‘Nemo’ – China – $20,000 2nd: William Pulte – U.S.A – $10,000 3rd: Chris Grove – U.S.A – $5,000 4th: Brandon Marshall – U.S.A – $3,500 5th: Nathan Webb – England – $2,500 6th: Joey Hamilton – U.S.A – $2,000 7th: Manny Kess – U.S.A – $1,500 8th: Chase DeMoor – U.S.A – $1,000 9th: Steven Markowitz – U.S.A – $1,000

🔍 Pre-flop:

Deryk Engelland limps in with K9 of spades for 20,000 from under-the-gun +1. Following suit, Jessica Canseco in the cutoff takes a similar approach, limping in with K8 of diamonds; Nathan Webb is next to act in the small blind and completes with A8o, Alexandra Botez checks her option with AQo in the big blind and they go 4-way to the flop.

💸 Flop – Kc Qd Tc

Webb and Botez check the extremely connected flop to Engelland, who fires out a bet of 35,000 with top pair and a gutshot straight draw. Canseco, with top pair and a backdoor flush draw, makes the call, while Webb folds from the small blind. Botez, with second pair and a gutshot straight draw, decides to stick around to see the turn.

💣 Turn – Jc

The turn brings in the flush which now also gives Botez the ace-high straight; she checks again to Engelland, who bets 75,000 with the bottom end of a straight. Canseco folds her pair of kings, but Botez decides to just call with her straight.

🌊 River – Js

The board pairs on the river, and now the value of Botez’s ace-high straight shrinks even more; she checks for a final time to Engelland. He bets 90,000 with his bad straight which is enough to put Botez all-in. Back on chess superstar Botez with the A-high straight, she will surely call….right? WPH #497: Could YOU Make This Fold???? [Game of Gold]

Hold on to your seats as Asian poker legend Michael Soyza battles it out against Ukraine’s poker powerhouse Olga Iermolcheva in this fascinating poker hand, which sees Soyza put to the test on a horrible river!

In some situations, such as 4-straight boards players will tend to under-bluff and therefore it becomes reasonable to fold out a higher percentage of your bluff-catchers, even if they are very strong.

Michael Soyza is a professional poker player from Malaysia. He has over $15,000,000 in total live earnings, putting him in the top 75 on the all-time money list. His biggest live cash of over $2,200,000 came from the $100,000 Vietnam Triton main event, where he finished second to Talal Shakerchi in 2023. He is the co-owner of the Asian Poker Tour (APT).

Olga Iermolcheva is a professional poker player from Ukraine. She has over $700,000 in live tournament earnings, Her best live cash of $113,580 came from the $2,500 Latin American Poker Tour – LAPT Panama, Panama City, Main Event in 2015.

Filmed in Seoul, South Korea and hosted by experienced poker broadcaster Ali Nejad, Game of Gold combines high stakes poker with survival reality TV. Over the course of the 12 episodes, the sixteen participants compete across various poker formats, including Sit & Go and Heads-Up games, Indian Poker and a standard tournament poker game.

The participants included Daniel Negreanu “KidPoker”, Jason Koon, Fedor Holz “CrownUpGuy”, Kevin Martin, Kyna England, Josh Arieh, Daniel Cates “Jungleman”, Lukas Robinson “RobinPoker”, Nikita Luther, Charlie Carrel “Epiphany77”, Johan Guilbert “YoH ViraL”, Olga Iermolcheva, David Williams, Andy Tsai “Andy Stacks”, Michael Soyza, and Maria Ho.

In Round 1, a four-tier Sit & Go poker format, each team (spades, diamonds, hearts, and clubs) put a poker player into a separate round of four-handed poker action, with Game of Gold coins on offer for finishing first, second, third, or fourth. The rounds increased in amount, until the fourth ‘mystery’ round, where it was unknown how many gold coins were on offer. The team with the least amount of Game of Gold coins at the end of all rounds would be eliminated.

The final six players competed in a winner-take-all format SNG. This was unique as it meant there was no ICM (Independent Chip Model) pressure on any of the poker players.

Game of Gold Results

1st: Maria Ho – U.S.A – $456,000 2nd: Daniel Cates ‘Jungleman’ – U.S.A – $0 3rd: Johan Guilbert ‘Yoh Viral’ – France – $0 4th: Fedor Holz ’CrownUpGuy’ – Germany – $0 5th: Kyna England – U.S.A – $0 6th Josh Arieh – U.S.A – $0

🔍 Pre-flop: With A3 of hearts in the cutoff, Olga Iermolcheva kicks off the action with a raise to 70,000. Michael Soyza calls with QJo in the small blind and Nikita Luther calls from the big blind with A4 of spades.

💸 Flop – Kd Qh Jc The flop comes down with all broadway cards, which Soyza and Luther check to Iermolcheva who decides to continuation bet for 80,000 with a backdoor flush draw and a gutshot straight draw. Soyza, with bottom two pair makes the call, while Luther folds, as the two poker players go to the turn heads-up.

💣 Turn – 4d With the second diamond coming on the turn Soyza checks, and Iermolcheva decides to check back, possibly waving the white flag in this hand.

🌊 River – Td The river brings the backdoor flush and one card to the straight. Soyza’s two pair has now shrunk in value which causes him to check for a third and final time. Now with the ace-high straight, Iermolcheva fires out a bet of 200,000 for just over half pot. Does Soyza call, fold, or even raise? You will have to watch this poker video to find out!

Ethan Yau, a.k.a Rampage, is a popular YouTuber and poker player. He has over 267,000 subscribers on YouTube and has won over $2,100,000 in tournament earnings, including a $900,000 win in a December 2022 World Poker Tour (WPT) High Roller at the Wynn.

The turn completes the flush. The big blind checks once more but this doesn’t slow down UTG+2 who continues for a much healthier bet of $125. Rampage now has the nut flush with a draw to the ultimate royal flush! The big blind also makes the call.

🌊 River – Td

What a river card for Rampage who has now hit the best hand in poker – the royal flush! Hustler Casino Live is a full-scale, high-value poker production. Close to a million dollars was spent transforming the casino’s high-limit poker room, the Crystal Room, into the set of this new state-of-the-art live poker show. Hustler Casino Live looks more like coverage of a TV broadcast sporting event and appeals to those beyond the poker community. This high stakes poker hand took place at the Hustler Casino Live casino in Los Angeles, California.

🃏 Preflop: The action starts with Henry who opts to raise with K9s from the cutoff, Will defends his big blind with QJo. Eric in the straddle looks down at pocket jacks aka the Jiggities and decides to 3-bet to $6,400. Both Henry and Will decide to call as all three of them head to the flop.

🔥 Flop – Kd Kc 9c: Henry couldn’t have really asked for a better flop as he cannot believe his eyes as he flops a full house! Will, who has a gutshot, decides to check to the preflop aggressor. Eric continues to tell his story of strength with a small continuation bet of $6,000. Henry correctly identifies that this is a spot that he should slowplay and elects for a call. Will folds in the big blind.

💪 Turn – Jc: The turn is an absolute disaster for Eric but he doesn’t know it as he now hits a full house too. Eric now thinks he is laying the trap as he decides to get tricky and check. Henry quite rightly wants to keep building a pot and sends out a bet of $15,000. Eric makes an easy call. He doesn’t want to scare his opponent away in case he is bluffing as he believes he has the hand locked up!

🚀 River – 2d: The river card changes nothing in their relative hand strength. Eric decides to check again, praying that Henry fires again. His prayers are answered as Henry shoves for $48,500 into the $62,500 pot. Eric snap calls and is shown the terrible news, his full house is no good!

WPH #494: Brad Owen BLASTS OFF With 72o!

Popular poker vlogger Brad Owen finds himself playing in a high stakes cash game and the 72o game is on! If he wins a hand with 72o then every player has to pay him $200 which is a huge $1400. Can Brad find a way to win with the worst hand in poker??

Brad Owen is a WPT ambassador and co-owner of The Lodge Card Club in Texas, he is a very successful YouTube poker vlogger with over 700,000 subscribers. His YouTube channel has had over 172,000,000 views. Primarily a cash game player Brad has started playing more tournaments since the start of 2022, his lifetime total live tournament winnings is over $480,000. His biggest cash for $125,000 came in May 2023 when he came 4th in the $5,250 WPT Main Event in Los Angeles.

Ivey’s Room, located at Aria Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, was established in 2010. Named after the legendary poker pro Phil Ivey, the high-stakes poker room quickly gained a reputation as a hotspot for professional and high-stakes players. Over the years, it hosted some of the most intense poker action in Las Vegas, attracting renowned players. In 2019, the room underwent renovations and rebranding as “Table 1.” Although no longer carrying Phil Ivey’s name, it remains a prominent venue for high-stakes poker and exclusive gaming experiences. Today, Table 1 at Aria continues to offer a luxurious and private poker setting for players seeking top-level competition and service in the heart of the Las Vegas Strip.

🔥 Brace yourselves for jaw-dropping action at the Aria Hotel & Casino’s legendary Table 1 in Las Vegas! In this $25/$50 cash game, poker sensation & popular vlogger Brad Owen unleashes an audacious play with the infamous 72o, the worst starting hand in poker.

🎉 The 7-2 Game: It is important to note that this table is playing the 7-2 game. Any player that wins with this hand and opts to show the table will collect a $200 bounty from each player, this creates extremely fun dynamics at the table as players will play extremely aggressively with this hand rather than just making the standard fold preflop!

🃏 Preflop: Brad Owen opens the action under the gun with a raise to $200 with the not so beautiful 72o. In an ideal situation everyone would just fold preflop for him to collect the easiest $1,400 of his life, but alas in a high stakes poker game that rarely happens and in this case he picks up two callers from the cutoff and button.

🔥 Flop – Qc 6d 3c: It’s very unlikely you will hit a good flop when holding the 72o and that is no different here as Brad flops absolutely nothing. This doesn’t slow him down though as he has his eyes on the $1,400 jackpot. He continues his story with a half pot bet of $400. That forces the cutoff to fold but unfortunately for Brad the button decides to stick around for the turn card.

💪 Turn – 8h: Brad Owen now only has to get through one player and continues betting this time for just over 2/3 pot as he fires $1,110 into the $1,575 pot. His prayers are not answered as the button calls once more.

🚀 River – 5s: The river provides some promise for Brad as he now has a card that blocks some straights. He decides to fire the third barrel and opts for a $1,700 bet. Will his opponent fold so that Brad can triumphantly reveal the 7-2 bluff and collect the $1,400 prize from his opponents? Watch this poker video to find out!
