WPH #458: $839,000 & He Flops QUADS vs POCKET ACES! [Brutal Cooler]
Whenever you flop quads it is always a double edged sword. It’s music to your ears as you are likely to have a lock on the poker hand but the difficulty is trying to get a lot of money into the pot as generally your opponent’s will not have a strong poker hand. But what about if they have pocket aces and then they turn a boat? You are very likely to get all of their money!
Jonathan discusses why you should generally flat call a raise preflop with medium strengthened pocket pairs because if you opt to 3-bet and then end up facing a 4-bet it can be miserable and very hard to navigate.
Punnat should generally feel very comfortable on the 886r flop with his pocket aces. He blocks all of the A8 suited hands and realistically Dan ‘Jungleman’ Cates should not really have many other poker hands containing an 8.
This poker hand history took place during the 2022 Triton Poker Cash Game in Cyprus at the luxurious Merit Royal Diamond Hotel & Casino North Cyprus. This high stakes cash game had blinds of $1,000/$2,000/$4,000 with most players sitting over $300,000 deep.
The action heats up pre-flop when Heung Wayne raises to $9,000 with KThh, Dan Cates calls with 88, and Punnat Punsri decides to 3bet to $54,000 with the best starting hand in hold’em – pocket aces. Heung Wayne folds but Dan Cates decides to call. Heading to the flop the pot was at a hefty $125,000, and the flop brought an exciting turn of events as the 8d 8h 6c landed which gave Dan ‘Jungleman’ Cates quad eights. Punnat Punsri bets $44,000 and Dan Cates starts to set the trap by just calling.
With the pot now at $213,000 the turn reveals the ace of diamonds giving Punsri a full house. Punnat Punsri checks, and Dan Cates bets $77,000. Punnat Punsri, who now thinks he is trapping just decides to call, and the pot grows to $367,000. The river brings an inconsequential 5 of diamonds, and Punnat Punsri checks once again. Dan Cates decides to wager all of his chips and moves all in for $236,000 and Punnat Punsri snap calls. The pot reaches a massive $839,000 and Punsri is delivered the bad news as Dan ‘Jungleman’ Cates reveals his quad eights and the entire poker table is in shock when Punsri shows his aces full.

In this poker hand history, the hand starts with under the gun straddling. It folds to Villain 1 who calls from the small blind, Jaman completes his option, and Villain 2 checks from the UTG. Heading to the flop, the community cards reveal Ad 6h 2c. Villain 1 checks, and Jaman decides to bet $20, which prompts under the gun to call and the small blind gets out of the way. The turn card is Kc, and Jaman decides to slow down and check behind after the small blind checks. On the river, an 8d appears, and Jaman bets around half pot with just 5 high which forces a fold from the small blind and Jaman drags in the $100 pot.
